I had to take Genie to the Kia dealer this morning. She began spouting coolant into my engine and smoking. The verdict is a blown water pump. Fortunately, it will only be $50 under warranty. Unfortunately, there are none in the US. One will have to be shipped.
So I have an Optima EX loaner for the next week or two. Decent car, but I tried to push for a Stinger. No dice.
I did sit in one though. It’s very nice. I also sat in the new K900 for the first time. It’s very nice and has some stitching and design elements the old one didn’t. The matte wood trim and aluminum looks great. Here are some pics I took while waiting.

Should have pushed for a Forte LX manual

Stinks about the car, but you’ll have it back soon enough.

I Should have pushed for a the Forte LX manual off a cliff
Yep.

Nice. Yeah, it’s a good car.

This is a weird thing to go bad in these, but oh well. At least they’re taking care of me.

If Ghandi had driven, he’d have a Kia Forte LX.

Who traded in a Ferrari for a Kia?
That is the real question.

If Gandhi had driven a Kia Forte LX, he would have advocated the use of violence.

Yay warranty! And the Optima is still a pretty nice loaner, if not as luxurious as the K900.

Charging for warranty work and a common part isn’t in stock in the whole country. You keep being you, Korean automakers.

Can’t they use a non genuine one in lieu?

Overnight parts from Seoul is clearly not a thing.

You have the only one.

That’s pretty lame that they have no water pumps in stock in the US.

Lol. They made it as mistake

That’s the owner’s Ferrari. He’s just putting it up for sale. Why he’s doing it on his showroom, I can’t say.

It’s a good little car, no penalty box. If I can’t have a Stinger, I can’t really complain.

He told me they can, but he didn’t recommend it. Things will probably be simpler if we use a genuine Kia sourced part.

Apparently not. This may be a side effect of owning the previous generation of a very small volume car and a part that rarely goes bad like this.
![]() 02/05/2019 at 13:24 |

It isn’t ideal for sure. But then, this is a part that rarely fails on a the last generation of a very low volume car. Still, I was surprised there wasn’t one anywhere to ship.

Is the $50 charge the deductible on the CPO warranty or is that the new car warranty?
![]() 02/05/2019 at 18:05 |
|
The CPO one year bumper to bumper is gone, so now this is in the 10 year/10k powertrain warranty period , which has a $50 deductible .

Thanks! I assumed it was something like that.

I honestly forgot about the deductible until he told me, but rules are rules.
![]() 02/05/2019 at 18:36 |

I’ve seen the deductible on a lot of CPO programs. It wold obviously be great if it was $0 but $50 isn’t too bad, especially for something like a water pump.
![]() 02/05/2019 at 18:45 |
|
You can look at it two ways. On the one hand, I think the original warranty is 10-yr/100 k with no deductible (obviously). On the other hand, the warranty drops to 6-yr/60k for a second owner, so the CPO designation restores the original powertrain.
The way I choose to look at it is that I get a statistically likely to be reliable NA 420 hp V8 with a good warranty, and $50 for what does go wrong isn’t bad. Plus, I get a free loaner.

I like the way you look at it. I’ve been eyeballing the 15-16(?) Genesises. They are getting cheap. I drove a V6 version at Carmax, and it seemed fine. It was super base though. I think a loaded V8 on CPO would be very, very sweet as a DD

I bought mine from the dealer that had leased it to the previous driver to begin with. I had the entire service history for its original 2.5 years on paper, all from that dealer. With that in hand, I didn’t flinch. If you can get the same or similar , you could have the deal of the century.

The service history is just icing on the cake! Sounds like a great buy!
I plan on buying a new DD towards the end of next year (will have student loans paid off by the end of this year and will have a lot of additional savings by then, hopefully). I’m all over the place with what I want but something from Korea, ideally with a V8, is on my list. I looked SUVs and Vipers online at lunch today, for example. I’m sure I’ll narrow it down as everything gets closer. Or, I’ll keep waiting and waiting and buy an FF in 5 years :D (that has a 0.1% chance of happening haha)

Well, I was determined that I was finally getting a convertible, right up until I didn’t. So you never know.
![]() 02/05/2019 at 19:47 |

That is what I’m worried about. I keep telling myself the next car will not be a 2 seat convertible, but the past 3 have been, so I do not have a great track record LOL. I’m trying to enjoy it while I can, but I do love taking friends on road trips since I’m the only one who likes to drive. A proper 4 seater would be nice for that.

Oh my daughter and I drove to Indy last holiday. Everyone wondered why I wouldn’t fly. I wanted to stretch Genie’s legs. It was wonderful.
![]() 02/06/2019 at 00:21 |

There are few things better than a nice road trip. I don’t mind flying, and fly all the time , but I still find it stressful. Driving relaxes me and gives flexibility at my destination. I am a little impulsive on trips so I like having that flexibility haha
![]() 02/06/2019 at 00:45 |

Being in control is huge. I always have to brace myself for argument with a flight crew over putting my chair on board. That and having to obsessively plan my time to go through security and be ready to preboard adds to the stress.
![]() 02/06/2019 at 00:50 |

That sounds very stressful. I flew on crutches once and it was a pita. I can only imagine how many extra hoops you have to jump through

I thought it unusual that the part is not only specific to the engine, but the car as well.
